![]() Looking at the Steam descriptions, one of them sounds like a throwaway arena combat DLC? Wut? what are the PoE2 expansions like? Because it sounds like not many people played them at all. is not a bad thing but also not what I expected seeing what they did in White March. Sounds to me like Defiance Bay expanded into the entire main campaign. A fun swashbuckling adventure with factions and Obsidian's patented reputation driven narrative design. But nope, I'm told that PoE2 is more like New Vegas with pirates. So then I wonder if when I finally beat PoE in the next week or two, and move on to PoE2, whether this is more of what I can expect, because it feels like it might be a change in direction they decided on while planning the sequel. But it builds and builds, goes completely off the rails, and embraces the far off lore in the game more than anything in the original campaign. At first it seems like another throwaway "magic Dwarvern forge" side content expansion which isn't consequential to anything. I appreciate the history and world building in PoE a ton, but yeah, maybe it could have been more interesting.Īnd that's where White March comes in. I liked it well enough (although clearly not loving it enough to finish it when it first came out, stopping just before the end because I thought Twin Elms was dragging on but it was actually the end of the game but I thought there would be more and kinda got distracted). It got a lot of flake for being a bit too dry and grounded, only teasing at bigger things. PoE1 was meant to be a classic BG style traditional fantasy campaign. It's kinda fascinating how it feels so different in intent, even in the same game world. Instead of arguing about whether PoE2 is a better game than PoE1, I'm more interested in talking about the different focus in tone for the narrative in each of the PoE projects. I love the sea shanties though.įinally, let me counter with a small list of things that I believe PoE2 does amazingly well, and even better than its predecessor: setting, itemization, quest and gameplay variety, systemic character growth, inventory and battle UI, skill design, and obviously graphics and overall presentation. Music - Admittedly, when a game isn't Nier or Ar Tonelico then I don't pay too much attention to music. It worked out pretty well for me, but I can see that it might not (probably cannot) do so for everyone. no level scaling, only upscaling, full scaling) and difficulty levels. PoE2 seeks to address this with various difficulty options (i.e. What's certainly true is that an open structure in an RPG means that it will have some impact on difficulty. I'd argue that a preference between those two is ultimately subjective. PoE2 is a much more open game than PoE1, which had a somewhat strict act structure that also greatly limits where you can go. Difficulty and Pacing - I put these together because I think they relate. And to me, all of that is narrative - and more important than the main storyline just by virtue of how much time you spend interacting with it. And you can notice almost everywhere how the state of the entire setting is formed by and in turn forms these factions. The all have believable backstories, motivations, goals, methods, and even various characteristic types of interpretations of these within their own ranks. (Not that PoE1 was bad in the broader scheme of games). But beyond that? The factions are so much more interesting, fleshed out, and relatable in PoE2 compared to PoE1. Narrative - I already agreed on the main story. The pirate fortresses, the shantytowns, the mercantilistic trading posts, the research outposts, the engwithan ruins, they all make sense and are fun to explore. Honestly though, even outside of Neketaka the areas seem cool. ![]() It's my favourite city in any CRPG in ages, and since cities are probably my favourite locations in these games I just can't fault the game for its area design. Area Design - I just don't agree with this, primarily due to the amazing quality of Neketaka.Talking about DLC, PoE2 also has its set of free patched-in superbosses, which are a rather special category of encounter (and honestly just too difficult for me to bother with). Interestingly, in both games the best encounters from a tactical perspective might be in their DLC. So if you look at the totality of all battles and do some average over them then I may agree.įor the main game though (and main sidequest lines/dungeons), I cant say that I do. This was also the case in 1, but it had fewer in total. Encounter design - PoE2 has a lot of bounties which are often just groups o enemies on a pretty nondescript battlefield.Click to shrink.Let me respond to these individually.

The key to consistently making a great sidecar cocktail is remembering your ratios. How To Make a Consistently Amazing Sidecar Cocktail Some people describe a sidecar cocktail as tasting like a whiskey sour, but with more fruity elements and a lighter taste and texture. However, a sidecar will always have a sweet-tart balance. The base flavors used in the cognac will play a role in the taste of the sidecar. Most cognac has fruity, spicy, sweet, or herbal flavors. While cognac is generally sweeter than brandy, it can have a variety of flavors. ![]() The type of cognac used will help determine if the drink will have additional bitter, sweet, or fruity elements. The sidecar is a dainty blend of tart lemon, citrus, and sweet flavors. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t sweet elements. What Does a Sidecar Cocktail Taste Like?Ī sidecar cocktail is considered a “sour” cocktail. In addition to making your drink look fancy, an orange garnish enhances the drinker’s experience with an additional fresh scent and adds an authentic orange flavor to the drink. You can use an orange wedge, twist, or peel to garnish your drink. It enhances the beverage’s look by adding an upscale element. Who doesn’t love a beautiful drink? Orange is an excellent garnish for the sidecar cocktail. On top of that, it gives your drink a polished and frosted look. The rim also prevents your garnish from falling into your cocktail and making it difficult to drink. The sugar rim creates an added layer of sweetness and surprising flavor when sipping the cocktail. It’s not only aesthetically pleasing but it is also a functional part of the drink. The sugar rim is a key part of the sidecar cocktail that you can’t skip. It boasts an authentic flavor, giving the drink an incredibly fresh taste. The Lemon juice provides a tart, citrus piece that complements the subtly sweet flavor of the cognac and plays well with the orange-flavored Cointreau.įresh lemon juice is always best when making a sidecar cocktail. Lemon juice is a crucial element in any sour. You can drink Cointreau by itself, but most people prefer to use Cointreau when making mixed drinks. It’s a rich, sweet, and flavorful liqueur often used in margaritas, sidecars, and cosmopolitans. It is an orange-flavored liqueur that originated in France and is used in various cocktails and shots. CointreauĬointreau is a type of triple sec. However, other grapes that are low in sugar and high in acidity, such as the Folignan grape, are acceptable too. Most cognac is made from specific wine grapes such as Ugni Blanc. It’s very similar to wine and has recently been considered luxury alcohol, although people of various social statuses like to consume it. CognacĬognac is a type of brandy that originated in Cognac, France. The ingredients are simple and work together to form a timeless cocktail that is light yet rich in flavor. The sidecar cocktail consists of cognac, Cointreau, lemon juice, sugar, and an orange twist for garnish. Cointreau eventually replaced Curaçao for similar reasons, and the modern sidecar was born. Over time, the brandy was replaced with cognac for more consistent flavoring. Unlike cognac, brandy has a much wider variety of flavors which can alter the dink’s taste. Curaçao was previously used instead of Cointreau, but the orange liqueur was difficult to source and of inconsistently quality because it came from the peels of inedible oranges on Curaçao island. The original 1948 Sidecar cocktail mixed brandy, lemon juice, and Cointreau. The Brandy Crusta mixes aged brandy, fresh lemon juice, Maraschino, orange liqueur, Angostura bitters, and simple syrup. However, the cocktail is also accredited to Pat MacGarry, a well-known bartender in London, England.Īnother possibility is that the sidecar descended from the classic Brandy crusta, which was conceived in the 1850s by a New Orleans bartender named Joseph Santini. The cocktail might have gotten its name from the motorcycle he used to ride to and from the cafe where the cocktail was born. Some think that the drink originated at a bar in Paris during World War 1, created by a man named Harry MacElhone. The exact history of the sidecar isn’t sure, although it is undoubtedly named for the motorcycle attachment. ![]() The sidecar cocktail was first published as an official drink in 1948 by David Embury, although it is believed to have originated well before that. ![]() How To Make a Consistently Amazing Sidecar Cocktail. What Does a Sidecar Cocktail Taste Like?. Similar “heartbeat bills” have been passed in other states but were eventually blocked by federal courts before going into effect. It’s incredibly unconstitutional,” said Aimee Arrambide, executive director of the statewide abortion rights group Avow Texas. But what it is in reality is just a ban on abortion at six weeks’ gestation, which is two weeks after a missed period. Sometimes, however, no heartbeat at 6 weeks may also be attributed to miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or failures in the equipment. There are still a handful of throwaways, but even the filler has a stylized, synthesized flair that makes it enjoyable, and the keepers are among the band's best. "Freeze Frame" has a great stop-start chorus, "Flamethrower" and "Piss on the Wall" rush along on hard-boogie riffs, and "Angel in Blue" is terrific neo-doo wop. With its singalong chorus, "Centerfold" exemplifies this trend, but it's merely the tip of the iceberg. Good-time rock & roll remains at the core of the group's music, but the sound of the record is glossier, shining with synthesizers and big pop hooks. Fans of the hard-driving rock of the group's '70s albums will find the sleek sound of Freeze Frame slightly disorienting, but the production gives the album cohesion. Geils Band finally broke through into the big leagues with Freeze Frame. It was written by their keyboard player Seth Justman, who explained to NME when asked about 'Flamethrower': 'It's not just about a woman, it's about a woman factory worker and how she lets loose at night.
